Many plumbing problems are easy to spot, such as dripping faucet or overflowing toilet. Other plumbing problems can go undetected for long periods of time, potentially causing major damage to your home. Here are a few signs of potential plumbing problems that should be checked by a plumber as soon as possible.
1. Water is draining slowly throughout the home.
If you notice that sinks, tubs, toilets, dishwasher and other drains are all emptying slowly, it is often a sign that there is a blockage in the main line rather than a clog at an individual drain. It’s important to stop using the plumbing system until a plumber can inspect the main line for blockage to avoid a backed-up sewer line – and a big mess. A sewer and drain line inspection can be performed using a small video camera.
2. You hear water running but there are no open fixtures or appliances running.
While running toilets and a water heater tanks filling are familiar plumbing sounds, if you hear dripping or running water sounds you have never heard before and can’t determine the source, call a plumber. Hidden water leaks can cause significant damage over time if allowed to go unchecked.
3. There are signs of a water leak.
Is there mildew or mold under sinks? Are there dark spots on ceilings? Does your home smell musty? These are all signs of potential water leaks.
4. Your Toilet is gurgling or bubbling after flushing.
This could be a sign of clogged sewer line. Have a plumber inspect the drain line and sewer to ensure there are no clogs or damage to the sewer and drain lines.
5. Water pressure has dropped.
If water pressure has dropped for a single source, such as a faucet or shower head, try soaking the aerator or shower head in vinegar to remove mineral deposits. Also ensure that the supply valves are completely open. If the water pressure has dropped throughout the entire home, a plumber should inspect the plumbing system to locate the cause.
4.Your water bill is unexpectedly higher.
This could indicate a hidden water leak. Have any visible leaks repaired and play it safe by having your plumber inspect the system for hidden leaks.
