Why do we do things this seemingly backwards way? Because everybody else is backwards, that’s why. Were you paying by the hour, it would be in our best interest to give slow and inefficient service, to overcomplicate your job, to be sloppy in hopes that we’d be called back to fix a mistake. Hourly pay tempts some contractors into forever running to town for yet another part or tool (some of them shaped and flavored suspiciously like doughnuts or cups of coffee) and billing for it. Or, conversely, if the contractor had a conscience, they might try to work quickly, and make mistakes you’d end up paying for in the future. By charging a flat rate for each job, it’s in both your and our interest for us to come prepared and to work as productively as possible. And of course, since you know from the start how much the project will cost, you won’t have to worry about passing out when we hand you the bill. Many plumbing services enjoy charging fees for administering first aid after the invoice is drawn up.

When you pay by the job, you’ll get a proficient technician who will do the job correctly the first time. We know, we know, it’s unusual and weird. But it’s only backwards when you compare it to other contractors who aren’t thinking forwards.
